Our Approach to Worship
For more than fifty years worship has been at the heart of our congregation’s life and work. Worship is where the church family meets on a regular basis. Worship is the primary offering we owe to God. When we built a new sanctuary in 1989 the design reflected our theology of worship. Worship is the heart of all that we do.
Sunday Mornings
The style of our services reflects the diverse makeup of our congregation. To satisfy a variety of preferences, we offer two very different worship experiences every Sunday morning.
At 9:00 AM; The service follows a traditional United Church liturgy. It is more quiet and formal than the 10:30 service. The hymns are mostly familiar to anyone with a background in the reformed tradition. In the first Sunday of most months, the service includes the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
At 10:30 AM; We try to worship in a style that is inclusive of people of all ages. The children participate until they leave us for their Children’s Church program. The service is not strictly ‘contemporary’ since it includes plenty of traditional elements including a weekly anthem performed by the Chancel Choir. Music is also performed by a children’s choir, a Music Team and a variety of soloists and other groups. Songs sung by the congregation are chosen to reflect the theme of the service and are drawn from a wide variety of both traditional and contemporary sources. Communion is celebrated at the 10:30 service five times during the year.
Between Victoria Day and Labour Day there is only one service each Sunday morning at 10am. Its style is a blend of traditional and less formal elements.
The preaching ministry is a key component for both Sunday morning services. Our ministers normally follow the common lectionary so that their preaching addresses the wide range of faith and life issues which are informed by the appointed scripture reading
Inclusive Worship (formerly Special Services of Praise)
On the last Wednesday of each month at 7:15 pm we offer a worship experience that is inclusive of folk in a wide variety of circumstances, including those living with significant developmental and other challenges. The style is experiential with lots of music and less emphasis on words and wordiness. Residents of area group homes are especially welcome.
The McDowell Chapel is open daily for private prayer and meditation.
There is plenty of on-street parking one block north, south, east and west of the Bridge St.- Herchimer Ave. intersection. On Sunday, Eastminster attendees may also park in the St. Joseph's parking lot, South on Herchimer, beyond the Kelly's Pharmacy lots.
